Born on November 18, 1980, in Ranny Edamon, Kerala, Libny Kattapuram is the son of Pastor Thomas Mathew and Mrs. Annamma Thomas. The first song he ever wrote came to him not in a studio, not at a piano, but in the middle of one of his father’s church services. He was fourteen, half listening to the sermon, when the words simply began to arrive. He wrote them down. That song became Thann Mahima Sannidhiyil, and though he had no idea at the time, it was the beginning of everything.
Around that same time, a recording of Yanni’s Tribute, performed live before the Taj Mahal, found its way to him. He had no formal training, no real sense yet of where his musical instincts might lead. But hearing Yanni, a self-taught musician who simply refused to put labels on what he created and let the music speak for itself, something clicked. If a musician could teach himself, find his own sound, and move people across every language and culture through music alone, then perhaps there was a path worth finding of his own. Songs like One Man’s Dream stayed with him through the years that followed, offering peace when he needed it and quietly keeping the belief alive that music was worth giving everything to.
Carrying that belief forward, by nineteen he had moved from writing to composing, completing Prathyashayin Thazhavarayil and beginning to understand, slowly and honestly, what he was actually made for.
Even though never a full time professional musician, nearly three decades on, the numbers tell part of the story. Over 107 songs written, 122 orchestrations arranged, and 107 compositions completed. Songs like Prakkalepol Naam Paraneedume, Nin Krooshil Allathenikken Nathane, and Ella Navum Padivazthum, sung by the celebrated K. S. Chithra, have found their way into Christian congregations well beyond Kerala. His most recent releases, Vaanchikunnen Nin Mukham Kaanuvan sung by Merin Gregory and Marannidathenne Maanikkunna voiced by Kester, carry that same intention forward.
